The alternative world of the 1950’s and 1960’s (no racism, openly queer people) comes into play by the language and style of dress. The artwork is typical graphic novel/comic style, boldly colored and decent detailed. There are spies, Russians and helicopters following people and more. We follow Goldie as she “helps” the house detective Walt, find a stolen necklace and a kidnapped guest. The graphic novel is the first four or five of the individual stories grouped. The novel follows the mystery of a movie being made, a stolen bejeweled swim cap, plus the family and friendship dynamic of Goldie. Goldie watches her mom be a live mermaid at a local club, talks poetry to the bartender/owner, and pines after Dianne, the coolest girl in town (and in the graphic novel looks like Carolyn Jones in Jailhouse Rock, only less haunted).

However, I do not think I would have liked or disliked any differently if I had read in reverse. I read the Goldie Vance novel, The Hotel Whodunit, before the graphic novel Goldie Vance volume 1 (though based on the comics) because the novel was due before the graphic novel at the library.
